Top 5 Winter Activities to Enjoy by the Fire

As winter continues, nothing beats cosying up by a roaring WillowWarm fire. Whether the weather’s after turning (in typical Irish fashion) or you’re just looking’ for a quiet night in, here are the top 5 winter activities to enjoy by the fire.

  1. Read a good book

For those looking to romanticise those long, chilly evenings, there’s nothing like curling up with a good book. And with the fire blazing, it’s the ultimate bit of relaxation. This winter, grab a copy of “The Wren, The Wren” by Anne Enright or dive into “Trespasses” by Louise Kennedy. If you’re after a bit of drama or suspense, “A Death in the Parish” by Richard Coles will keep you hooked ’til the wee hours. A cup of tea, a blanket, and the fire crackling away – what more could you want?

  2. Have a toasty movie marathon

Grab the blankets, settle on the couch, and throw on a few winter favourites for the ultimate movie night by the fire. At the minute, “The Killer” is all the rage on Netflix, and “Saltburn” is the talk of the town on Sky Cinema. Add a bowl of popcorn, and you’re sorted!

  3. Board games and puzzles

There’s nothing like a bit of craic with a board game to keep the whole family entertained on a cold night. Get the gang together and break out games like Monopoly: Super Mario Edition, Harry Potter Scrabble, or even Exploding Kittens. Or, if you’re up for a challenge, grab a 1,000-piece puzzle and gather round the fire. With a bit of friendly competition, sure you’ll have great memories to look back on, and the fire keeps everyone warm and toasty.

  4. Hot chocolate tasting

Sure what’s winter without a good mug of Dairy Milk or Nesquik hot chocolate? Take it up a notch with a proper hot chocolate-tasting session. Go mad with different flavours – from white to mint – and throw in all the trimmings like whipped cream, marshmallows, or a splash of Baileys if you’re feeling fancy! While you’re sipping away, throw on some tunes from Spotify or Apple Music.

  5. Tell stories or play music

There’s nothing more Irish than a good yarn by the fire. Gather everyone ’round and let the stories flow – whether they’re ghost stories, family memories, or even a few tall tales. If someone’s handy with the guitar, bring it out and have a bit of a sing-song! You can belt out Dermot Kennedy’s “Kiss Me” or stick to the old reliables to keep the night rolling. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a night in, with the fire blazing and the craic mighty.

With these activities, you’ll have the perfect winter evenings sorted. So, light up the fire, grab the blankets, and settle in for some grand nights at home. Whether you’re losing yourself in a book, binge-watching the latest flicks, or enjoying a sing-song, you’re all set for a cosy and fun-filled winter.

Safety Do’s and Don’ts for Christmas decorations

The festive season is a time for great craic and celebration, and decking out your home is all part of the festive fun. But don’t forget to keep safety in mind, so your celebrations are free from any unwanted drama. Here are some essential safety DO’s and DON’Ts for Christmas decorations to help you enjoy a merry, accident-free time.

Safety DO’s

1. Do use UL-listed decorations

Make sure all your lights and electrical bits and bobs have been tested for safety by a recognised group like UL (Underwriters Laboratories). No one needs a dodgy set of lights causing havoc!

2. Do inspect lights for damage

Before stringing up the lights, have a good look for any frayed wires, broken bulbs, or loose connections. If anything is damaged, bin it straight away – better safe than sorry!

3. Do use LED lights

LED lights are the way to go – they’re cooler and far more energy-efficient than the old incandescent ones. Plus, they lower the fire risk and save you a few bob on the electricity bill!

4. Do follow manufacturer’s instructions

Have a read of the instructions – even if you think you’ve got it sussed. Sticking to the manufacturer’s advice will keep things safe and sound.

5. Do use indoor and outdoor lights appropriately

If it says “outdoor,” keep it outside! Indoor lights aren’t built for our wet weather and using them outside could be asking for trouble.

6. Do secure decorations properly

Make sure all your decorations are properly fastened. Use the right hooks or fasteners, sure it’s worth the extra effort!

7. Do turn off lights when unattended

Always turn off the lights when you’re heading to bed or out of the house. No need to leave the tree glowing away while you’re not there!

8. Do keep real trees hydrated

If you’ve gone for the real deal with a Christmas tree, keep it well-watered. A dry tree is like a tinderbox waiting to go up in flames, so check the water every day!

9. Do keep decorations away from heat sources

Keep anything flammable well away from fireplaces, radiators, and candles. The last thing you want is your decorations catching fire!

Safety DON’Ts

1. Don’t overload electrical outlets

Don’t go mad plugging too many decorations into one outlet. It can overheat and cause a fire.

2. Don’t block exits with decorations

Make sure your decorations aren’t blocking doorways, hallways, or any emergency exits. You don’t want to be tripping over a tinsel-covered reindeer if you need to get out quickly!

3. Don’t use nails or staples on electrical cords

Don’t be hammering nails or staples into your electrical cords. It could pierce the insulation and cause a shock or fire. Use insulated hooks or clips instead.

By following these safety DO’s and DON’Ts for Christmas decorations, you’ll be set for a safe and jolly festive season, free from any unwanted mishaps. Now, that’s the kind of Christmas everyone can enjoy!

How to get a good fire going with WillowWarm

How to Start a Long-Lasting Fire with WillowWarm

Starting a fire that’ll burn long is a breeze with WillowWarm. Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have the place warm and cosy in no time:

  1. Prep the fireplace or stove

First off, make sure your fireplace or stove is cleaned out—no old ash hanging about. Good airflow is key for a proper fire, so give your chimney or flue a once-over to make sure it’s clear and ready for action.

  2. Get the kindling and briquettes ready

Start by laying down some wood kindling—dry twigs or small bits of wood will do the job nicely. Pop a couple of WillowWarm Briquettes on top of that. They’re nice and dense, so they’ll give you a steady, long-lasting burn once they get going.

  3. Light the kindling

Grab some matches or a firelighter and get that kindling crackling. As the flames catch, they’ll set the WillowWarm Briquettes alight. With their low moisture content, these briquettes ignite quickly, saving you the hassle of fighting with damp logs.

  4. Build the fire slowly

Once you’ve got the briquettes burning well, add a few more, but don’t go mad and pile them all in at once. Too many too soon will choke the airflow and slow things down.

  5. Keep it ticking over

To keep the fire roaring, just add briquettes as you need them. WillowWarm Briquettes burn longer than your usual firewood, so you won’t need as many to keep the room nice and snug. For those looking for long-lasting home heating solutions or eco-friendly briquettes, these are a game changer.

With these easy steps, you’ll have yourself a lovely fire, warming the house and keeping the winter chill at bay, all thanks to WillowWarm Briquettes. Grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy our eco-friendly heat!

5 ways to stay warm this winter

As winter starts to bite staying warm becomes a top priority for everyone. Whether it’s layering up or keeping the house toasty, you can breeze through the cold months without battling the chills by following a few simple steps. Here’s five ways to keep warm this winter!

  1. Use high-quality briquettes & firewood

High-quality, eco-friendly WillowWarm briquettes will keep your home as warm as a snug pub on a cold winter’s night. Our carbon-neutral briquettes offer efficient and sustainable heating that’ll see you and your loved ones staying cosy all season long. With their long-lasting heat, you’ll be warm enough to knock off the woolly socks. Find your local stockist now!

  2. Layer up with warm clothing

Dressing in layers is one of the most effective ways to trap body heat. Start with a warm base layer, add insulating layers such as wool or fleece to retain heat, and finish with a windproof and waterproof outer layer to protect against the elements. Regardless of whether your clothing is from the high street or an outdoor specialist brand, this approach will keep you toasty while also allowing you to adjust your clothing based on the ever-changing temperatures.

  3. Ever considered using electric blankets or mattress toppers?

The weather outside may be frightful, but not every home has a fireplace to keep things delightful. Electric blankets and hot water bottles are an excellent alternative for providing warmth. Use an electric blanket to preheat your bed before you go to sleep or keep warm while relaxing on your couch. Hot water bottles can be placed under the covers or held close to provide instant warmth during the cold and rainy months while mattress toppers give an extra layer of cosiness.

  4. SOUP-Glorious-Soup!

Ah, there’s nothing quite like a good bowl of soup, is there? Whether it’s a creamy potato and leek or a good ol’ bowl of chicken and veg, soup will warm you right to the bones. Pair it with a cup of tea, a strong coffee, or even a hot chocolate if you’re feelin’ fancy, and you’ll be grand. Hot meals like stews, casseroles, and soups are the heart and soul of winter – they’ll keep you happy out! Pick up some ingredients from your local shop and get the slow cooker going for a hearty soup or casserole!

To crown the winners of WillowWarm Christmas Schools Competition
Sustainable efforts of the students won a storytelling session with Ryan, €1,000 for their school plus one tonne of WillowWarm Briquettes for winning teacher

‘Twas a few nights before Christmas and some lucky Co. Cavan students have won a very special visit from self-professed book worm and avid-reader Ryan Tubridy as part of the WillowWarm Christmas Schools competition. The pupils of St Joseph’s National School, Kingscourt, Co Cavan were delighted when Ryan arrived to celebrate their winning entry, presenting them with their prize and joining them for a storytelling session.

Students were tasked with getting creative to tell the story of their school’s efforts to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable, by entering a video, short story, painting or project with a €1,000 prize for the school’s sustainability activities plus one tonne of WillowWarm Briquettes awarded to the winning teacher. As a carbon-neutral, sustainably grown home fuel produced in Co. Meath and the brighter, cleaner, greener way to a cosy home this winter, WillowWarm Briquettes are the perfect partner to lead students by example on the need to make necessary changes in our daily lives to help the environment.

In their winning entry, the second class pupils of St Joseph’s National School, Kingscourt put together an outstanding video documenting many of their efforts around sustainability and the environment, actively promoting the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, including such initiatives as carpooling and encouraging walking to school where possible with their ‘Walk to school Wednesday’ initiative! Whilst also carrying out a walkability audit for An Taisce to assess the best possible routes for walking to school, noting the unmaintained routes, such as obstructions on footpaths in order to present a report to the County Council.

As Ryan left the winning school, all the students from St Joseph’s gathered in the school yard to wave him off and give him a Christmas cheer!

Ryan Tubridy said: “What a great day of storytelling and sustainability we have had here in Kingscourt! The students of St Joseph’s really impressed us with their environmental efforts – I think the future is in good hands with these bright sparks. The WillowWarm Christmas Schools competition is such a great way for me to reconnect with young people in Ireland who I love to chat to and encourage to read. I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and well done again to everyone who took part this year.”

Commenting on the winning entry, Alan Breslin, Business Development Manager WillowWarm Briquettes said: “At a time when we’re all having to be so aware of the impact of climate change, it is gratifying to see the passion and commitment from the young pupils of St Joseph’s National School and the practical steps they are taking. WillowWarm is equally committed on our mission of helping Ireland transition to renewable heat by providing our indigenous, carbon-neutral product to the Irish market.”

How to use WillowWarm Briquettes

As our WillowWarm Briquettes are one of the most heavy and dense fuel types in the market, they are ideal for maintaining your fire.

Because they contain less moisture, WillowWarm Briquettes offer a cleaner burn with high heat efficiency, meaning that when dried a higher percentage of the heat goes directly towards the heat output, rather than the drying of the fuel first. As no energy is needed to first evaporate water in the fuel, dried fuel provides the most consistent operating cost. With its low moisture content, WillowWarm products therefore give off more heat per unit burned and a higher heat efficiency, resulting in a long, clean burn.

Steps to ensure you are using your WillowWarm Briquettes efficiently

1. Establish your fire as normal e.g., with kindling etc.

2. Use no more than two to three WillowWarm Briquettes initially. Any more may cause the fire to choke or go out due to the weight/density of the briquettes. The briquettes are purposely heavy and dense which guarantees a long burn time with the structure lasting for much longer than many other wood fuels.

Willow Warm - How to Light a Fire

3. Pitch two briquettes up against the kindling which has just been lit. This increases the surface area of the briquette and helps the fire to catch.

Willow Warm - How to Light a Fire

4. Once the two briquettes have caught fire, place one more on top horizontally. This traps the fire more, contains the fire in the combustion chamber for longer (as opposed to having more fire and heat lost by escaping up the chimney flue).

5. Allow all fuel to burn. Once established in a fire setting, one briquette should last for well over an hour then add one or two more briquettes to re-charge the fire. However, we all have our how levels of comfort when it comes to how cosy we like a room to be and it’s worth bearing in mind that houses can very much differ as to how they retain heat. Judge for yourself as to when you need to add more fuel.

6. Lastly, sit back and enjoy a WillowWarm Briquette fire.

Added benefits

One of the added benefits of WillowWarm Briquettes are they produce less than 3% ash and no sulphur meaning you have less cleaning to do of your chimney and surrounding areas. Let’s face it, no one enjoys the prospect of getting up each morning to clean a fire!

As WillowWarm Briquettes are 100% natural, any ash produced can be disposed of in the garden with no adverse effect to plant life, making them clean for both your home and the environment. How can you go wrong?

[ux_video url=”https://youtu.be/DgmL3M8atkA”]

Remember!! Store your WillowWarm Briquettes indoors ideally, but if not, in a rainproof container positioned off the ground. The product is hydroscopic as it is dried to less than 10% moisture – and water is it’s enemy so keep it DRY.

Safety tips!

  • Always store WillowWarm Briquettes in a dry location away from a stove or open fire
  • Never leave an open fire without a spark guard
  • Always ensure that a stove or fireplace has adequate ventilation for safe combustion.
  • Regularly maintain your chimney and have it cleaned by a proper chimney sweep.
  • Use WillowWarm Briquettes with high efficiency air regulated stoves and open fires fitted with a flue damper.
  • Always have your stove or fireplace maintained by a qualified technician.

WillowWarm Briquettes welcomes Dermot Bannon as Brand Ambassador

WillowWarm Briquettes is delighted to announce Architect and TV broadcaster Dermot Bannon as their new Brand Ambassador.

Dermot says, “I’m delighted to be partnering with the WillowWarm team – an Irish company which is going from strength to strength producing a carbon neutral, sustainably grown briquette which is harvested and produced in Meath and is available nationwide.

At a time when we’re all having to be so aware of the impact of climate change, not only can we make necessary changes to our homes such as heat pumps, solar panels and insulation, we can benefit hugely from using a product on a day-to-day basis which is good for the environment!

I’m looking forward to supporting the team and am excited to be part of the further expansion of their product range in the coming months.”
