5 Ways to Make Your Home More Sustainable This Autumn

5 Ways to Make Your Home More Sustainable This Autumn

With summer holidays and warm, balmy nights a distant memory, thoughts turn to colder days and longer autumnal nights. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as we can make changes now to ensure our days and nights at home are as cosy and cost-effective as possible.

Reducing your carbon footprint and making sustainable choices doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Small changes like choosing WillowWarm products will have big impacts on your family, the environment, and your wallet.

Here are 5 ways to make your home more eco-friendly.

  1. Seal up drafts and insulate

Before turning up the heat, make sure your home isn’t leaking warmth.

Drafty windows and doors waste energy, forcing your heating system to work harder.

Use weatherstripping or draft stoppers. There are many low-cost options in local hardware and retail stores.

Check attic insulation and seal cracks around windows and doors.

A well-insulated home can reduce your heating bill by up to 20%.

  1. Switch to LED Lighting

Shorter autumn days and longer nights mean we use more lighting, therefore consider changing to LED bulbs, which use up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and they last much longer.

  1. Compost Autumn Leaves and Food Waste

How do our gardens accumulate so many leaves? But you can turn these to your advantage by turning them into rich compost. Similarly you can utilise food waste.

A simple compost bin is all you need to get started.

  1. Use a Programmable Thermostat

Set it and forget it, for lower bills and a lower impact.

“Did we leave the immersion on?”  never worry about that question again by installing a programmable thermostat. Set the desired temperature and await your lower bill.

Did you know a 1°C change in setting can cut your heating costs by about 10%?

  1. Choose Eco-Friendly Decor and Cleaning Products

Autumn often brings a wave of redecorating and cleaning—make it green.

Choose eco-friendly candles, cleaners, and air fresheners eliminating toxins and synthetic chemicals from your home.

Options include beeswax candles, natural fiber throws, and non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners or natural options include using white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon in your cleaning.

Autumn is a season of change, and a great time to shift toward more sustainable habits. By making these five simple changes, you can reduce your environmental impact, save money, and enjoy a healthier, cozier home all season long.

Which of these will you try first?

Why choose carbon-neutral fuel

Why choose carbon-neutral fuel

We all want to do our bit for the environment. Whether that’s recycling our rubbish, being conscious of electricity use, or considering more sustainable fashion. Choosing a carbon-neutral fuel can be one giant step in making your contribution to the planet. Here’s how:

Buy Our Product | View our product

  1. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
  • The carbon emitted by fuel like WillowWarm when burned was previously absorbed during the fuel’s life cycle (e.g., by trees during growth). Find out more here (link to lifecycle on website)
  • In comparison, fossil fuels release new carbon stored underground for millions of years.
  1. Supports sustainability
  • Carbon-neutral fuels often come from renewable sources, such as managed forests or agricultural byproducts, unlike fossil fuels, which are depleting and are damaging to the environment. Our WillowWarm products are made from a blend of 100% renewable Irish-grown forests and willow crops.
  1. Improves air quality
  • Carbon-neutral fuels burn cleaner and longer, producing less ash, smoke, and pollutants, improving indoor and outdoor air quality. A win overall!
  1. Can lower energy costs over time
  • Renewable or carbon-neutral fuels are locally sourced, reducing transport costs and supporting local economies. WillowWarm is 100% produced and manufactured in Ireland.
  1. Helps meet climate goals
  • Using carbon-neutral heating options at home contributes to broader climate action efforts and is therefore a positive step for your family’s future and that of the environment.

Practical tips to prepare for Autumn

Practical tips to prepare for Autumn

Here are some practical tips to prepare your open fire for autumn, ensuring it’s safe, efficient, and cozy as the cooler months approach:

With autumn fast approaching (unfortunately!), here are some tips to ensure your fire is safe, efficient, and super cosy for the chilly days and nights ahead.

Inspect and Clean the Chimney

  • Arrange for a chimney sweep to clean and inspect the chimney or flue, removing any soot, blockages (e.g. birds’ nests), etc. This will help to improve airflow and reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
  • Remove old ashes.
  • Clean glass doors and check any grates or screens for damage.

Check the Fireplace Structure

  • Check for any cracks, loose bricks, or damaged firebacks in the fireplace or hearth.
  • Ensure the damper opens and closes smoothly, sealing well when closed and opening fully for proper ventilation.

Check Safety Equipment

  • Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors – if you don’t have any, please consider installing some as a matter of urgency. Both items are easily available in local hardware and household stores.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and review basic fire safety rules with all members of the household.

Choose WillowWarm!

  • Put WillowWarm on your shopping list this week!
  • To ensure a long, clean burn, your WillowWarm must be stored ideally indoors, but if not in a dry, covered, rainproof area elevated off the ground.

Tips for using a fire pit safely

Here are five essential tips for using a fire pit safely and effectively

A fire pit is a fantastic, stylish way to enjoy autumn evenings in the garden, but as with all open flames, safety is paramount. So, how do you ensure your fire pit is set up safely and effectively?

Buy Our Product | View our product

  1. Location, location, location
  • You need a flat, non-flammable surface such as stone, brick, or gravel. A fire pit should never be placed on a deck or dry grass.
  • Position the fire pit at least 10 feet away from trees, any overhanging structures (drains, awnings), and buildings.
  • Keep seating well clear of the fire pit.

  1. Watch the Weather
  • This is Ireland, so let’s be fair, we’re always talking about the weather, but for a fire pit to work safely, don’t use it on windy days where there is an increased risk of embers escaping.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher, water, or a hose handy.

  1. Supervision
  • No matter if the party is just getting started or is in full swing, never leave a fire pit unattended.
  • At the end of the night, ensure the fire is well out – use water and stir the ashes to ensure it is fully extinguished.
  • Ensure children and pets are kept at a safe distance.

  1. Use the Right Fuel
  • Avoid softwoods like pine that spark.
  • Never burn rubbish (takeaway boxes), treated wood, or accelerants.
  • Of course, WillowWarm is the perfect garden fuel to ensure a long, clean burn, meaning you can enjoy your evening and the great company of family and friends.

How are our products sustainable?

  1. 100% renewable Irish-grown forests and willow crop

Our products are crafted entirely from sustainably harvested Irish-grown forests and willow crop. Unlike traditional fossil fuels or imported firewood, we use parts of the forest that might otherwise be considered waste, in tandem with expanding willow as an economically viable energy crop in Ireland. With a lifespan of about 36 years, willow is generally harvested every two years and does not need to be ploughed, re-planted, or re-seeded annually

  1. Local and Renewable

Our products are 100% Irish, grown and produced in Meath, meaning we’re reducing transportation emissions and supporting Irish farmers and communities. The 2-year growth cycle of willow means it can be harvested repeatedly without damaging ecosystems or forests.

  1. Low Moisture, High Efficiency

With moisture content below 10%, our WillowWarm products provide a warmer and cleaner output than conventional wood or traditional fuel. This means less smoke, less ash, a longer burn, and more heat per log—making your fire more efficient and reducing indoor and outdoor air pollution.

  1. Minimal waste

Our manufacturing process is designed to minimise waste. There is very little ash left in your grate after using WillowWarm products, meaning daily cleaning is not required. Given its origins, the ash is also a safe, nutrient-rich addition to your garden soil, closing the loop and supporting sustainable gardening.

Making a sustainability heating choice for you home means reducing your carbon footprint, protecting natural resources, and contributing to a healthier environment. Switching to WillowWarm products is a simple, impactful way to make your home heating greener and cleaner for you and your family – one cosy fire at a time.
